Many homeowners think designing a kitchen begins with picking items like appliances, flooring, cabinet finishes, countertops, faucets and light … and to some point it does. But I try to keep my clients from worrying about many of these items until after the space preparation is complete. The huge number of options may be distracting, and it may be overwhelming for many homeowners to make these decisions at the same time. You might think you would like a cooktop and different double oven, but it might not be the ideal appliance package for your layout, and at some stage you are going to be faced with this choice. Obtaining overcommitted too early on can stifle imagination and hinder your progress in getting the very best kitchen layout for your house.

For many, choosing kitchen fixtures and finishes is similar to being a kid in a candy shop. They enjoy everything and can not remain focused on what’s right for the overall design or aesthetic. For others, it is paralyzing. They get so worried about picking the wrong fixture or finish that they have difficulty making decisions or focusing on other crucial aspects of the job available.

Although we always begin a kitchen remodel with inspiration photos to get an overall idea about what the customer desires the kitchen to look like, I often shelve most of these until after the preliminary plans are complete.

I see kitchen remodels as a set of little, layered options. Below are some suggestions for how and when to create them later space preparation is complete.

1. Appliances, Sinks and Lighting

I urge that clients select appliances and sinks throughout the preliminary design phase, which often comes before selecting the remaining finishes and fixtures. This is so the plans can reflect the proper dimensions, which will consequently affect the cabinetry layout.

Also, I recommend picking the type and volume of light fixtures in this phase: cans, semi-flush mounts, how many pendants over the island and so forth, so as to complete the lighting plans so that the contractor to supply quotes. Most people have not actually chosen what style pendant light however, but at least the conclusion about number is finished.

It is time to choose whether or not you desire a prep sink in addition to your principal sink. At this point, by the way, it is fine if you choose to change out of a 36-inch range into some cooktop and wall mount.

By the time you get to final construction documents or purchase cabinets, but these decisions must be finalized. The nice thing is that there are now a few big decisions which you can check off your list.

As you can see from comparing the first two pictures here, the choice on how many pendants to use affects how many junction boxes you need on the ceiling and that choice has to be made before plans become approved for licenses and prior to the contractor shuts up the drywall after demanding electrical is completed.

This is the reason why the professional you hired may concentrate you on figuring out the best light strategy before picking out the countertops.

You may have chosen your appliances sooner in the design phase, concerning manufacturer, model number and size, but keep in mind that stainless isn’t the only alternative. Some companies offer a vintage finish similar to this black with brass accents, while others provide a wide selection of enameled colors. Choices in this way can establish the appearance and feel of your kitchen in one sweeping gesture. Other end choices to be mentioned here would be the full-height marble backsplash, the farmhouse sink, cloth in the upper glass insert cabinets, the thick crown molding and the island.

2. Cabinets, Countertops and Tile

Depending on what type of professional you hired, or if you are doing your own kitchen, then you might begin the finishes and fixture selection procedure from another jumping-off point.

Rather than picking the cabinet wood species and finish colour by itself, then picking tile and countertops, I love to have my clients work on an overall palette of materials in the exact same time. Layer the substances and create collages of patterns, textures and colours to determine what works best together.

Sure a customer might have the idea that they want a “white kitchen” meaning white cabinets, but you will find many “whites” on the market, and what exactly you combine them with really makes a huge effect on what the total kitchen will look like.

Each little choice is styled to realize what the last appearance of the kitchen will be. In this kitchen, an antique glazed finish versus pure white cabinets, terra-cotta 2-inch tile versus subway tile, and glass-front cabinets give this kitchen its unique fingerprint.

By contrast, this timeless kitchen with walnut cabinets plus a marble backsplash backsplash has less ornamentation than the previous one, but it is still about the set of little choices: the ease of a single cabinet finish and timber species, the choice to run the marble tile all the way into the ceiling and match the exact same marble onto the countertops. By way of a series of little options, this kitchen shows its personality and says, “This is who I am: I am classic, hot, and earthy.”

For those modernists on the market, you’d think picking finishes and fixtures would be simpler, with less adornment and fewer decisions to make. For some this may be accurate, but I discover that for many others this style can be equally as hard. It is all about editing and restraint, and that’s hard.

The small options in this kitchen comprise slick appliances, nonstop lighting, plus a flat-planel door design on the cabinets. Two more signature elements: the full-height glass backsplash and the waterfall-style island countertop.

The mixing and layering of finishes in this kitchen give it an old-world allure. Note the glazed blue-gray island and its connection to the ring above. The options for a mahogany-tone wood countertop, dark trim around the windows and a custom made hood surround in particular were made throughout the process of designing the kitchen and impact the overall final appearance and style.

Hint: Order present samples of the substances you are thinking about. Receive a door sample with your design and finish for final approval. Ensure that you go to the stone provider and see and label the actual slab of marble to your countertops, and be sure that you purchase a present controller sample of tile to your backsplash. These extra measures will cut back on costly mistakes.

Decorative tile in the kitchen is a great way to express your personality and style, but proportion and scale are crucial. Tile is a fairly permanent decision; once it is up, it is expensive to change. You or your designer should do colour studies and pattern studies, and look at them alongside samples and photos to be absolutely sure you are making the proper choices.

3. Flooring

Matching the floor stain color is one of the most challenging stages of a project. If you have got original floors and intend to refinish only the kitchen or are laying new wood floors to match the older for continuity — don’t expect a perfect fit. Many floors in older houses are made of old-growth timber, and flooring is produced differently now. The natural patina of a classic floor also is nearly impossible to match. Firms offering reclaimed wood floors can make that matching procedure simpler.

Testing is the best way to have a close match. Even when you’re not attempting to fit new to older, doing stain tests on samples of the actual flooring is the ideal way to get it correctly.

If you are doing tile or stone floors, focus on picking those substances in precisely the exact same period as cabinets, backsplash and countertops. The relationships among these substances is crucial. It is hard to combine unique types of tile and stone if you don’t want your kitchen to look like a showroom.

4. Paint Colors

When I have worked with the customer to select the collage of substances for your kitchen, we lay these out to concentrate on paint colour. The main reason this phase often comes little later is that the kitchen may be under construction and still have the old paint colour on the walls. The floors could be covered in that pinkish-red rosin paper, which may affect the expression of the colour on the walls.

When looking at your paint swatches, be sure your walls are primed white. If you plan to paint your window and door casings, prime them whitened also. If you are keeping them as they are, be sure they’re free of dust. Any quantity of colour in the room can throw off the brand new wall color sample tests.

Select your paint colours beside the other substances, such as pulling back a part of the protective floor covering to get a fantastic sense of how the colours work with the new stain colour.

5. Cosmetic Details

Details like wrought iron cabinet doors, niches for oils and spices, and ornamental lighting should be considered while working on the plan development and finish/fixture selection.

6. Furnishings and Accessories

Picking bar stools and chairs and tables for an eat-in kitchen usually comes in the end, but this can also be significant, so don’t just mail it in at the stage. Consider incorporating patina and texture through vintage pieces in the event that you can locate them. And remember about items like decorative plate racks, artwork and rugs rugs or runners. Little touches like this may add much personality to a newly remodeled kitchen.
