Something about this chair is oddly comfortable. While I could never see the doggone sailboat in these dotty posters in the mall, I could very clearly see the backs of the Series 7 Chair by Arne Jacobsen, the Tulip Armchair by Eero Saarinen and the Eames Eiffel Chair by Charles Eames outlined on the trunk of Philippe Starck’s Masters Chair. In honoring these contemporary furniture masters, Starck has created something new and exciting. While I’ve discovered more musical mashups than I cared to lately (I attribute Glee), the Masters Chair has me chomping at the bit for more furniture mashups, whether they are a victory such as this one or even a complete disaster. See the chair in activity under and decide whether you think it’s working.

Can you find the traces of the above modern icons? I collect a miniature Masters Chair ideabook to assist.

Since the chair is made of polypropylene (that is, plastic), it can add major fashion outside. Stark white and black are a nice contrast to this cosmetic decking.

Along with the most popular options, white and black, the chair is available in gray, sage green, rusty orange and mustard.

Homeowner Daniel Vianna curated his apartment in Brooklyn to be “a showroom for contemporary industrial design,” he says, and the Masters Chair is part of the mix. Incidentally, we’ve covered nearly every other chair featured in his house, and that the Saarinen table Vianna picked was featured in our Modern Icons/New Classics series.

Talking of mixing, the chair mingles well with additional Starck designs. This roof deck includes a child-size Ghost Seat and a Gnome Side Table.

A mix of white and black seats adds interesting curved lines to this minimalist open area.

A glass tabletop permits an almost entirely clear perspective of the seats. The straight lines of this table’s foundation are a nice comparison to the Master’s curves.

Because of its sophisticated type, the Masters is one of the few plastic, outdoor-suitable seats that functions in a luxe bedroom.
