When my husband and I purchased our 90-year-old Craftsman fixer-upper, we made a vow to restore it to its former glory. Regrettably, our home has luan doors during. It is our wish to replace them all, one at a time.

The five-panel horizontal doors that originally graced our doorway frames shortly will fill them all again. Their streamlined, classic design adds the rich architectural detailing originally intended because of our bungalow. With five panels, the design could be modern and streamlined or reminiscent of its Victorian roots.

You’ll notice there are two variants of the door style: the formal doorway with five raised panels along with the newer, easier, flat-panel design. Both are guaranteed to refresh any door in your dwelling.

Feast your eyes on the traditional five-panel horizontal doorway. It seems oh so good in pocket form.

Having began our door replacement project, we’ve put this new man in our master bedroom. I smile every time I open it.

What’s best about five-panel doors is their ability to blend with other rich architectural details. Designer Paul Moon unites them together with wainscoting, crown molding and snazzy banisters to produce the hall of my dreams.

Flat five-panel doors are frequently used in assignment and Arts and Crafts homes. Combined with a Craftsman header and wainscoting, these doors are architectural stone.

Not to be taken too seriously, a five paneler can work beautifully in children’ quarters.

Five-panel doors also set well with doors of other styles. Here, Richard Bubnowski Design fabulously unites one with a glass counterpart.

These flat, painted panels pop from the stormy blue wall and reclaimed pine flooring. Painted poplar doors provide a crisp, contemporary feel.

Installed as French doors, these pack an excess punch. Double the panels, double the pleasure!

Contrasting hardware onto a five-panel door really stands out. This juxtaposition between the stark white palette and bronzed hardware is a breath of fresh air.

Chr DAUER Architects

Here, painted, raised panels float inside the framework of the doorway instead of being glued. This approach allows for expansion and contraction of the five panels.
