Light grey is the decade’s trendiest neutral. It’s replaced beige because the wall color of choice. (I actually do not know if this is true in a statistical sense, but it certainly feels like it)

An authentic neutral grey is a combination of white and black, but we barely ever see an actual neutral gray. What we see are infinite shades of cool and warm grays. Warm grays have yellow or brown undertones. Grays have a blue undertone. The ubiquitous “greige” is a really warm grey that can look practically beige.

Cool or blue grays have a tendency to get a very crisp, almost icy appearance to them. They’re wonderful with vivid whites in formal rooms and with blues and beiges. You can treat them. Warm or yellow grays are complemented with creamy whites and warm colors like yellows, pinks and natural forests.

But, of course, there are no quick rues. A cool grey can be the ideal means to offset wood, and you are more than welcome to combine a warm grey with blues.

These illustrations reveal a variety of mash-ups that work and exemplify the beauty and versatility of the color.
